Forensic Structural Engineering

When something goes wrong, the first job is finding out why

Storm & Wind

Careful investigation that separates true storm damage from wear, age, and pre-existing defects

After a storm, the question is rarely whether damage exists. It is what caused it, how far it extends, and whether the storm is actually responsible. G&W investigates structural damage from wind, hail, and tornado events, on both roof and non-roof components. The central job is distinguishing storm-related damage from pre-existing conditions, deferred maintenance, and construction defects, which is often the deciding factor in an insurance claim or dispute. We inspect load paths, connections, framing, and roof systems, document conditions thoroughly, and report whether the damage ties to the storm event or another source. Where it helps, we provide repair recommendations and an opinion on repair versus replacement.

CORE CAPABILITIES

Vehicle Impact

Thorough assessment of structural impact that reaches beyond the visible point of contact

When a vehicle strikes a building or structure, the visible damage is often only part of the story. The force can compromise columns, load-bearing walls, framing, and connections well beyond the point of contact, and some of that damage is not obvious on a walk-through. G&W evaluates the full structural impact to determine whether the building remains stable, what repairs are needed to restore its original capacity, and how the damage relates to the force of the impact. Our findings give owners, insurers, and attorneys a clear, defensible account of the condition and the corrective scope.

CORE CAPABILITIES

Fire Damage

Detailed evaluation of how fire and heat reduced a structure's remaining capacity

Fire damages structure in ways that are not always visible. Heat reduces the strength of steel, concrete, and wood, and the affected zone often extends past the area that visibly burned. Concrete can spall or crack, steel can lose strength or distort, and reinforcement behind intact-looking surfaces can be compromised. G&W assesses fire-affected structures to determine which members retain their original capacity, which need repair, and which must be replaced. Where the visual evidence is not enough, material testing helps establish how much capacity remains. Our findings give owners, insurers, and design teams a sound basis for repair, reconstruction, or demolition decisions.

CORE CAPABILITIES

Moisture Intrusion

Investigation that traces water damage to its source and tells active problems from old

Moisture is one of the most common and most underestimated causes of structural deterioration. Long-term water intrusion can rot framing, corrode connections and reinforcement, and undermine foundations before the damage becomes obvious. G&W investigates the source and extent of moisture-related structural damage, distinguishes active problems from ones that have stabilized, and identifies the repairs needed to restore the structure. Establishing where the water came from and how long it has been present is often essential to resolving the underlying claim or dispute, and it is a question we answer directly.
