The ice rink at the Kirkwood Community Center opened in 1999 and ran on an R-22 refrigeration plant that could no longer be supported. The City replaced it with an ammonia-based ice plant, along with a new rink slab, dasher boards, and dehumidification, all inside a five-month window between the last skate in late February and reopening on August 1, 2026.
Working under the project architect, G&W provided MEPFP Engineering for the building systems serving the new plant: electrical demolition back to the panels, power connections to the packaged ice plant, evaporative cooler, exhaust fans, and two new dehumidification units, a reverse osmosis water treatment system for ice making, and the IIAR ventilation and leak detection package that controls machinery room fans and safeties for the ammonia system. Documents were produced in Revit for permit, bid, and construction, followed by construction administration through as-built drawings.
G&W also served as commissioning authority for the ice and dehumidification systems, delivering the construction-phase commissioning plan, checklists and test sheets, functional performance testing, owner training, and the final report.
