Jefferson Courts Building

Opened in 1903 as one of Wisconsin’s first Carnegie libraries, the building at 125 South Jefferson Street now serves the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin. Renovating a structure with that history means fitting modern systems into fabric built across three construction eras and reworked twice before, without disrupting what earned the building its place on the National Register. The second-floor renovation reworked roughly 4,000 SF into private offices, conference rooms, a courtroom, reception area, public restroom, and a pantry, with provisions built in for a future prisoner elevator under separate contract. G&W provided MEPFP Engineering, evaluating existing conditions before designing new HVAC, plumbing fixtures, lighting, circuitry, and low voltage rough-in. Drawings were produced in Revit and carried through permit, shop drawing review, a jobsite observation, and final punch list.
