The chapel at First Church of Christ Scientist is a mid-century landmark on Ladue Road in Creve Coeur, and its steeply pitched roof is a defining part of the architecture. After decades of service, the original standing-seam copper and EPDM had reached the end of their life, with failed flashings and sealants letting water saturate the underlayment below. Replacing a roof like this is something a congregation takes on once in a generation, and it called for an advocate to protect the owner’s interests from start to finish.
G&W served as the owner’s consultant, evaluating both roof sections and developing a replacement scope to current IBC 2022 and ANSI/SPRI ES-1 wind uplift requirements. Roof cores confirmed the existing assembly and were tested for asbestos before design began. From there the role carried through construction management and weekly quality-assurance observations, confirming the installation followed the contract documents through closeout.
